Kapama Private Game Reserve is situated in the Limpopo Province and was proclaimed a private nature reserve in December 1993. Covering approximately 13 000 hectares of prime big game territory, Kapama Private Game Reserve has succeeded in combining the wilderness of the bush with the comforts of five-star hospitality and facilities.
The name comes from Kapama, a Swazi king, whose tribe inhabited and hunted the northern Drakensberg mountain region around Mariepskop back in the 1880s.
A game relocation programme was introduced and the reserve now supports a wide variety of game including elephant, buffalo, rhinoceros, and large populations of giraffe, impala, blue wildebeest and kudu. Predators include lion, leopard, cheetah, spotted hyena and many smaller species.
kapama Kapama Private Game Reserve covers 13 000 hectares of undisturbed bushveld in prime Big Five country. The reserve enjoys panoramic views of the nearby Drakensberg mountain range and is only 40 km from the Kruger National Park.
The reserve is central to most of the scenic areas of Mpumalanga and Limpopo Province.
Eastgate Airport lies just outside the reserve with a private entrance into Kapama Private Game Reserve.

Kapama Private Nature Reserve has gained a reputation as a centre of wildlife management and research and, although tourism features prominently in the reserve, it is the aim of the owner and his team to maintain a balance between the demands of tourism and those of conservation.
Bird-watching is most rewarding and more than 350 species have been recorded, including the rare Gymnogeg and Knob-billed duck. The vegetation is typical of the lowveld: mixed woodland, which is dominated by a variety of acacia and bushwillow species, but also includes tamboti, marula, silver clusterleaf and jackalberry.
Game viewing during the hot summer months (October to April) is more comfortable in the early mornings and late afternoon when it is cooler. Late afternoon rain showers and not uncommon in summer and provide much sought-after relief for both humans and animals.

Twenty luxurios, thatched chalets, decorated to reflect Africa's rich txtures, are set in indigigenous gardens. Winding timber walkways link the reception area, conference room, lounge. library and dining-room.
The tea deck is a relaxing venue for watching an abundance of birds in the balmy evening, while the lounge offers a warm, cosy welcome on cool winter evenings.


Built on the theme of an East African safari camp of bygone days, Buffalo Camp offers visitors to the African bush a unique and intimate experience. It is ideally suited to those who wish to experience the essence of the bushveld without compromising on comfort.
Eight luxury canvas tents, each sleeping two guests, are set on stilts in the upper reaches of tall trees, overlooking a seasonal river. Each tent has private bathroom facilities and is interconnected to other tents by wooden walkways high above a sandy river bed. Hot water is provided by an ingenious and effective African boiler.
Set in an indigenous garden, the accommodation facilities, thatched bar, dining-room and campfire area contribute to the intimate ambience of the camp. At night, lanterns, rather than electric lights, glow under the canopy of treetops. The camp's refreshing swimming pool offers respite from the heat of the African summer or the day's adventures may be shared in the cool open-air bar with its spectacular view over the river bed.
Since the camp accommodates only 16 guests, special attention is devoted to personalised service. With the guidance of knowledgeable game rangers and its unrivalled comfort, Buffalo Camp is a truly authentic way to experience the African bush.


Personal hospitality in select company is the hallmark of Kapama's Nyala House, where eight people are accommodated in four double bedrooms with en suite facilities. Nyala house is child friendly and is ideal for a family or small groups.
This tastefully furnished house provides guests with supremely comfortable home-from-home accommodation and delicious meals prepared by a full-time housekeeper. A safari vehicle and game ranger are assigned to provide guests with the bush experience of their choice.
