Nightclubs and Discos Cape Town
As an old harbour town, Cape Town has always had - despite strictest Calvinist morale - a busy nightlife.
For a long time it was concentrated in Long Street in the centre of town and in the Main Road of Sea Point.
With the massive increase in the number of visitors after the end of Apartheid, the entertainment industry also started to boom. New pubs, music pubs, discotheques and nightclubs mushroomed up all over town.
The development of the Waterfront still strengthened this tendency.
In the late nineties the Dockside, the biggest nightclub of Africa, opened.
It is situated next to the fun park Ratanga Junction.
The temple-like building houses a gigantic discotheque for up to 5000 people, bars, restaurants and conference facilities.
They also have live music and big theme parties.
The light and sound technique is of the best and with the hydraulic lift even a car can be heaved to the stage.
The gay and lesbian scene is also well established in Cape Town. The Tourism Office keeps a brochure, the "Pink Map", with detailed information on the scene places and their whereabouts.
Many of them can be found in the fashionably restored part of town called "De Waterkant" between the city centre and Green Point.

Today Cape Town is a "Fun City" with many discotheques, dances, places with live music and clubs. There is always a big "event", a mass party under a special motto to be found going down somewhere in town. One can find out in the Cape Times on Friday what's on over the weekend.
