City Hall Cape Town

The City Hall in Darling Street, built in 1905 is one of the landmarks of the city centre.
Its most impressive feature is the opulently decorated marble facade which combines Italian renaissance features with the English colonial style.
The building houses the town library and Cape Town's main concert hall.

In the olden days, military parades often took place on the Grand Parade, the expansive square in front of the City Hall.
Nowadays, street markets are held twice a week where vendors sell new and used clothing.
Marketwomen stand behind thick fabric bales negotiating prices with their customers and there is a smell of fried fish and flowers.

Visitors can experience this only on Wednesdays and Saturdays. At other times the parade is a huge parking lot, although not very pretty it is very useful, as you will find.
